FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about the Via Transilvanica.
How long does it take to complete the entire trail?
Walking the full trail usually takes between 60 and 90 days, depending on pace and weather. Cycling can reduce the time to 20–30 days. However, our recommendation is to enjoy the trail and the experience rather than focus on counting kilometers. This is a route meant to be discovered slowly, not rushed. Enjoy the journey and the adventure, not just the finish!
Can I cycle the Via Transilvanica?
Yes. Cycling is best done on specialized bikes; you can rent from us, including e‑bikes, helmets, front lights, and we can also arrange transport of this equipment along the route.
Where do I sleep along the route and what does accommodation usually cost?
Accommodation includes guesthouses, cabins and small hotels on or near the trail. Prices usually range from €20–50 per person per night. We can help you choose and book according to your stages and preferences.
Is the trail safe?
Yes, the trail is generally very safe. As with any outdoor activity, it’s recommended to stay informed about weather conditions and local advice.

Bears: although many tourists use the trail every day, no serious incidents involving bear encounters have been reported so far. For additional safety, we can provide bear spray and sound‑warning devices to help prevent unwanted wildlife interactions.

Dogs: encounters with sheepdogs are also common along the trail, but they are usually resolved peacefully. Our advice is to stay calm and communicate with the shepherds whenever they are present. If noone is around, we recommend that you do not run!, instead, slowly move away from the area while speaking to the dogs in a gentle, reassuring tone.
(these dogs are raised to protect livestock from wild animals and, under normal circumstances, they do not attack people)
Can you help me plan my trip?
Yes, we can help you plan your Via Transilvanica journey, whether it’s a short section, a multi‑day hike, or a longer expedition on bike or by foot, customized to your pace and preferences.

We can assist with organizing and planning your trip, arranging transfers to and from the trail, and providing necessary equipment such as bicycles or safety devices. We maintain daily contact for your safety and help you communicate with hosts and local people you may encounter along the route.
